Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project Press Briefing on Territory-wide Baseline Assessment Findings
Mr Leong Cheung, Executive Director, Charities and Community of The Hong Kong Jockey Club delivered the opening remarks, followed by the announcement of the study results by representatives of the four institutes, namely Professor Jean Woo, Director of the CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing; Dr Cheryl Chui, Research Assistant Professor of Sau Po Centre on Ageing of The University of Hong Kong; Professor Maggie Lau, Assistant Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies of Lingnan University; and Dr Alma Au, Associate Professor of the Institute of Active Ageing of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
More than 9,500 respondents of questionnaire survey and over 700 participants of 91 focus groups took part in the baseline assessment studies, with the aim of assessing the current level of age-friendliness in the community according to the eight domains of age-friendly city defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). About 87% of the interviewees were 50 years old or above. The results showed that the three lowest-rated domains were community support and health services, housing, and civic participation and employment. Riding on the findings of questionnaire survey and focus group interviews, the research team had identified the common age-friendly concerns and suggested directions of action to enhance age-friendliness, which helped to facilitate the implementation of evidence-based district programmes under the Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project for enhancing the age-friendliness of local communities.
