Ageing well is an important goal of the city in face of the trend of ageing population.   With the support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Charities Trust, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Jockey Club Institute of Ageing was commissioned to measure the well-being of older people by compiling the AgeWatch Index for Hong Kong (Index). A press conference was held on 5 October 2016 to announce the results of the Index for the second year. Ms Imelda Chan, the HKJC Head of Charities (Grant Making – Elderly, Rehabilitation, Medical, Environment & Family) addressed an opening speech. Presented by Professor Jean Woo, Director of the CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing, and Professor Hung Wong, Management Committee Member of CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing, the findings revealed that Hong Kong ranked 19th among 97 countries or territories globally in terms of elderly well-being in 2015.   Hong Kong’s performance was outstanding in terms of physical health, physical safety and access to public transport, but improvements were needed in income security, mental health and social connection.  The Index helps identify areas for improvement and facilitates project planning with a view to turning Hong Kong into an age-friendly city.

Two elders were invited to share their retired life in the press conference. Mr Wong shared that active participation in volunteering activities made his retired life more meaningful. Another senior citizen Ms Mak, an ambassador of the Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project, shared that the ambassador training and activities enriched her understanding on age-friendly city and that she would help promote age-friendly messages in the community.
